Google Earth
by Ed Miller |
If you've tried MapQuest and Yahoo
Maps and a few other internet based mapping tools, you've already
discovered how quick and easy it is to get a map, directions or even
a satellite view of some locations. Now get ready for MapQuest
on Steroids or in other other words "Google Earth".
Google Earth (earth.google.com)
is the newest power tool from the search engine giant. You have
to see to appreciate and best of all, the personal version of it
is FREE!
Google Earth adds 2D and even 3D
views of the earth. You can zoom into any place, any address,
any thing that is in Google's huge database. The colors
and animation and detail that you will see is just amazing.
However, Google Earth is not just
about the gee-whiz factor. Commercial applications are
available to integrate Google Earth with GPS and radio frequency
identification systems (RFID) making it possible to track
inventory or shipping or car navigation. Google Earth can
even be customized to the user to provide automatic updates on
restaurants, gas stations, hotels and other points of interest.
This thing may have potential that we haven't even thought of
yet.
Definitely try it. Its' free, but
you do need a fairly new computer with either Windows 2000 or XP
in order to use it.
